Make it your business to know consumer rights

Hertfordshire County Council’s Trading Standards service is calling on businesses to brush up on their knowledge of consumer rights legislation, in light of new research.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has revealed that just 45 per cent of UK businesses claim to know the rules on unfair terms as set out in the Consumer Rights Act 2015, while 18 per cent admitted to not having heard of them.

Business owners and managers in Hertfordshire can remind themselves of how to treat customers fairly and what constitutes an ‘unfair term’ through guides and videos published by the CMA.

Richard Thake, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said “Consumers often have little choice but to accept terms and conditions, so it’s vital that businesses abide by the law and offer a fair deal. The CMA’s guides are a way of helping businesses understand their obligations and our trading standards team is also on hand to advise businesses in need of support.”

Companies in Hertfordshire can contact the Trading Standards business advice hotline on 01707 281401 and the CMA’s guides are available at: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/writing-fair-contracts-guidance-for-businesses
