Watford Borough Council And Veolia Improve Street Scene On St Albans Road

An 18 month project run by Watford Borough Council and Veolia to tackle environmental eyesores on St Albans Road and the off-shoot streets has already seen a 46 per cent reduction in fly tipping since it started in spring.

Veolia’s waste and recycling services, street operatives and the Council’s Environmental Health team have joined forces to target sections of roads on St Albans Road area (from Leavesden Road to Balmoral Road and immediately surrounding roads) for three months at a time. Together the partnership team are solving street scene issues that blight the landscape such as fly tipping of black sacks around bins, bins left on pavements, overflowing contaminated bins etc. through bin audits, ensuring households and businesses have the correct bin provisions/agreements, delivering educational flyers on fly tipping, enforcement measures to persistent offenders and even delivering school assemblies in the target areas.

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said:

“‘St Albans Road is key route into and out of our town. It is used by thousands of people every day, with many businesses are based there. The area has also been highlighted as a fly tipping hotspot, so Veolia and our Environmental Health team have been focusing on the St Albans Road area (from Leavesden Road to Balmoral Road and immediately surrounding roads) to help improve street scene issues. It’s great to see the reduction in fly tipping since the project started 18 months ago. The council are also investing in new street furniture, improved paving, tree planting, more cycle friendly routes and other changes to the look and feel of the area”

Darren Harding, Senior Contracts Manager for Veolia Watford said:

“St Albans Road is a busy area made up of multiple uses including residential and business such as retail, charity shops, restaurants, takeaways and generally a high proportion of short term rental properties – all of which can pose challenges for clean and tidy streets.

Veolia is committed in improving the street scene on St Albans Road and our close working partnership methods has reduced the number of bins left on pavements by 70% and contaminated household bins by 67% on Victoria Road, Lowestoft Road, Leavesden Road and St Albans Road when compared to June to August of last year. We are pleased with the results for the first phase of this project and we will continue to work closely with Watford Borough Council to improve the landscape of St. Albans Road.
